Fraggle Rock! 09/16/2011
One of the best shows I watched as kid. Add Comment I Capture the Castle 09/06/2011
If you're in the mood for a quirky little movie about growing up and finding one's way through love, family, and secrets, this is a great way to spend an evening. I hear it is not as good as the book (isn't that usually the case?) but I haven't read it, so this suits me just fine! And it probably will for you. Anna Karenina - brilliant! 09/06/2011
Please, for the love of God, watch this! This amazing piece sets two love stories side by side to show the outcome of impulsivity versus careful, slow decision making. It pits marriages of convenience against marriages for love. It's about making the choice to follow one's heart versus doing the right thing, and the consequences of one's actions. This adaptation is good (I really like Helen McRory, who plays Anna). You will miss the rejected engagement scene of Kitty and her disappointed admirer, so keep that in mind. Northanger Abbey 08/31/2011
Sadly, I am forced to admit that this series is entertaining, enjoyable, but obviously forgetful! I can't quite remember this one. I remember it partly, but it is one of those long, drawn-out love stories that you forget quickly. Worth watching again, but lacks a storyline so compelling that it sticks with you. Victorian Farm. Older era, harder work. 08/21/2011
A harder time than in the Edwardian era (see below). These three brave folk are very hard workers, and prove themselves by living as Victorians for a year. This beautiful series is a real eye opener. If you've always wondered how things were done "back then," you can watch a first-hand experience for yourself. Irish Travellers reality series. 08/21/2011
Irish Travellers are focused on here, not Roma Gypsies. This is a controversial series, mainly because it focuses on the negatives of the culture and doesn't represent actual Gypsies. To me, it is the just, deserved, and kind choice Hopkins makes at the end of this movie that makes it so good. Brave and generous Hidalgo deserves pure freedom on the grassy plains. I also love the Arabians featured in this movie. They are ridden by Bedouins in the desert... ah, how I love this! Keep in mind that, contrary to the movie's claims, the real Hopkins only told a tall tale about his trek across the desert. The movie is decieving, claiming it is fact. Jane Eyre - my favorite film version. 05/15/2011
Jane Eyre is my favorite novel. The hero and heroine are imperfect, both feeling themselves unworthy of the other's love. However, that is real love, is it not? Accepting the faults and loving anyway. I have never managed to do this in my own life, so I find this novel to be THE BEST love story. My favorite story ever told is Beauty and the Beast, and Jane Eyre is a version of this, beautifully written (I suggest everyone read Bronte's novel to really feel the emotions of the story). This PBS/Masterpiece Theatre filming is the truest to the novel with characters who really fit the parts. In other versions, to shorten into movie length, huge pieces of the novel are cut out and changed. And they never seem to get the casting of Jane quite right - yes, she is meant to be plain, but something is missing every other time. Not here. Finally, we are not let down. North and South 05/15/2011
I often forget how good this miniseries is. It slowly develops and by the end, it pulls you in tightly. Although a reluctant love story is the the centre, the piece explores the working conditions in England at the time. The importance of unions, these days taken for granted and often criticized, is evident here. Child labour laws are also needed - without these two things, employers would take advantage of the lower class once again in the western world, just as they do elsewhere today. |
